WTF Jeans: From College Project to 170K+ Orders Across India
What began as a college project in 2017 evolved through customised clothing, e-commerce and marketplace operations into W.T.F ® — Witnessing True Fashion, a youth-focused denim brand serving customers across India.
By W.T.F ® Witnessing True Fashion
Every brand has a beginning. Ours began in a classroom.
In 2017, Govind Kumar Singh created a college project for NIFT Students called Witnessing True Fashion W.T.F. The idea was rooted in a simple observation: fashion never stands still. It changes with people, culture, music, streets and generations.
The project explored this constant evolution — the idea of witnessing fashion as it changed around us.
At the time, W.T.F. was not a large business or a national operation. There were no marketplace dashboards, warehouses or thousands of customers. It was simply an idea and an exploration of fashion.
But the project did not end with college.
It became the starting point of a much longer journey.

From Witnessing Fashion to Witnessing True Fashion
After the college project, W.T.F. gradually moved from an idea into something people could actually wear.
The early journey began with customised clothing, creating garments around individual customer requirements. The scale was small, but those experiences brought W.T.F. closer to something that would later become fundamental to the brand: understanding what people actually want to wear.
Every customer was different. Their preferences around fit, style, colour and design were different too.
Those early interactions taught us an important lesson:
Listen to the customer first. Then design.
As the idea evolved, so did its identity.
Witnessing Fashion became Witnessing True Fashion — W.T.F ®.
The evolution of the name reflected a larger change. W.T.F. was no longer only about observing fashion; it was beginning to participate in it by designing, creating and eventually building products for a much larger audience.
From Customised Clothing to E-Commerce
The next chapter was the transition from creating customised garments for individual customers to building a ready-to-wear fashion business.
That presented a completely different challenge.
Creating something for one person allows you to understand that customer's preferences directly. Building a product that thousands of customers across India will independently choose requires a much deeper understanding of consumer behaviour.
What are people searching for? Which fits are gaining momentum? What makes someone choose one product over another? Why does a customer return something? What makes someone come back and buy again?
E-commerce began giving us answers.
Products became opportunities to learn. Purchases became signals. Returns highlighted areas that needed improvement. Repeat purchases helped us understand when we had created something customers genuinely valued.
Gradually, W.T.F ® was evolving from a creative project into a consumer fashion business.

Marketplaces Became Our Classroom
A significant chapter in the W.T.F ® journey came through online marketplaces.
As we strengthened our operations on platforms including Myntra and Flipkart, W.T.F ® began reaching customers far beyond the geography where the idea had originally started.
The marketplaces gave us distribution, but they gave us something even more valuable:
They became our classroom.
At scale, customer behaviour became a continuous source of feedback. Searches helped us understand demand. Conversion showed us which products connected with customers. Returns highlighted opportunities to improve fit, sizing and product expectations. Repeat purchases told us when we had created something worth coming back for.
This experience gradually changed the way we approached fashion.
Creative instinct remained important, but increasingly, it was being informed by real customer behaviour and marketplace data.
The customer was no longer simply at the end of the design process. The customer was becoming part of it.
Finding Our Focus in Denim
As W.T.F ® evolved, one category increasingly became central to our journey: denim.
Jeans are among the most familiar pieces in a wardrobe, yet denim is constantly reinventing itself. Skinny fits dominate one era, straight fits another. Relaxed silhouettes emerge. Baggy jeans move from subculture to mainstream fashion. Bootcuts disappear and return for an entirely new generation.
At the same time, young Indian consumers are discovering fashion faster than ever.
Social media, creators, music, street culture and global fashion movements allow a new trend to travel across the world almost instantly. Young Indians see those influences, but they also interpret them in their own way.
This changing landscape brought us back to the philosophy behind the original W.T.F. project:
Witness what is changing. Understand it. Build for what comes next.
Over time, our ambition became clearer.
To build denim that speaks the language of young India.
Relaxed fits, baggy jeans, bootcut silhouettes and the next evolution of denim are not simply product categories for us. They represent a generation becoming more confident about how it wants to dress.
That is the generation we want to keep designing for.
When the Brand Started Travelling
Recently, while looking at the geographical distribution of W.T.F® orders, we noticed something that made us stop for a moment.
Our order mix was spread across the country:
North — 34.4% | West — 25.8% | South — 22.6% | East — 17.2%
At first, they were percentages on a dashboard.
Then we looked at them differently.
Each percentage represented people — someone discovering W.T.F® for the first time, someone experimenting with a new fit, someone coming back for another pair, or someone recommending the brand to a friend.
What began as a college project was now reaching customers across India.
The brand had started travelling.
From a College Project to 170K+ Orders
There are two important timelines in the W.T.F® story.
The origin of W.T.F. goes back to 2017, when Witnessing Fashion began as a college project and subsequently evolved through customised clothing and early experimentation.
The last 2.4 years represent a newer phase of scaled operations — a period in which W.T.F® strengthened its marketplace business, sharpened its focus on denim and began reaching customers across India at a significantly larger scale.
During this phase, W.T.F ® has reached:
| Our Journey So Far | |
|---|---|
| Orders | 170K+ |
| Customers | 120K+ |
| GMV Growth | 2.4X in 2 years |
| Operations | Profitable |
We are proud of these numbers, but the longer we build W.T.F®, the more we realise that numbers tell only part of the story.
Behind Every Number Is Someone Who Chose W.T.F ®
Writing 170K+ orders is easy.
Thinking about more than 170,000 individual purchase decisions feels very different.
Somebody discovered W.T.F® while searching for their next pair of jeans. Someone decided to try a relaxed fit for the first time. Someone took a chance on a brand they had never worn before. Someone came back. Someone recommended us to a friend.
Someone also returned a product — and through that experience helped us understand what needed to improve.
Not all of these moments appear on a business dashboard, but they are how brands are actually built.
One product. One customer. One experience at a time.
And slowly, one order at a time, a college project started becoming a brand serving customers across India.
From Marketplace Reach to Our Own D2C Presence
Marketplaces continue to play an important role in the W.T.F ® journey. They have helped us reach customers at scale and learn from consumer behaviour across different parts of India.
But building a brand also requires a direct relationship with the people who wear it.
That led to another important step in our evolution: building our own D2C presence.
Today, W.T.F® operates through a combination of marketplace reach and its own digital platform. We don't see marketplaces and D2C as competing ideas. Each contributes something different to the journey.
Marketplaces help us reach. Data helps us learn. Products give customers a reason to choose us. Our own platform gives us an opportunity to build a deeper relationship with the people behind those orders.
Together, they are helping us build the next version of W.T.F®.
What “Witnessing True Fashion” Means Today
The W.T.F ® of today looks very different from the college project created in 2017.
The name evolved. The products evolved. The channels evolved. The scale evolved.
But the curiosity behind the original idea remains.
Witness what people are wearing. Understand how fashion is changing. Build for what comes next.
That is what Witnessing True Fashion means to us today.
It does not mean claiming to know exactly where fashion will go next. It means staying close enough to our customers to keep learning, experimenting and evolving with them.
Built for Young India
Young India is not one homogeneous fashion consumer.
Someone in Bengaluru may interpret a trend differently from someone in Delhi, Jaipur, Pune, Kolkata or Guwahati. Yet increasingly, they are connected to the same world of creators, music, street culture, social media, marketplaces and global fashion.
That makes this generation incredibly exciting to design for.
Our ambition is to understand those changing preferences and translate them into denim that feels relevant to the way young India wants to dress.
Relaxed. Baggy. Bootcut. And whatever comes next.
The silhouettes will change. The washes will change. Fashion will certainly change.
Our job is to keep watching.
The Story Is Still Being Written
In 2017, W.T.F. was a college project.
Today, W.T.F ® Witnessing True Fashion serves customers across India through leading marketplaces and its own digital presence.
There is a lot between those two sentences: customised garments, experiments, mistakes, first orders, marketplace learning, products that worked, products that didn't, customers who came back, and thousands of small decisions that gradually shaped the brand.
And there is still much more ahead.
We want to create better fits and better denim, strengthen distribution, deepen our marketplace partnerships, build stronger direct relationships with customers and continue understanding what young India wants to wear next.
We are proud of how far W.T.F® has travelled.
But we are even more excited about where it can go from here.
Thank You, India
To everyone who took a chance on their first W.T.F® product, thank you.
To everyone who came back for another, thank you.
To everyone who reviewed a product, shared feedback, recommended W.T.F® to a friend or simply followed our journey, thank you.
In 2017, the story began with an idea about Witnessing Fashion.
Today, that idea has evolved into Witnessing True Fashion.
A lot has changed since then, but the thought at the heart of W.T.F® remains remarkably simple:
Keep watching how fashion changes.
Keep listening to the customer.
Keep building what comes next.
W.T.F ® — Witnessing True Fashion
Built for Young India.
